Merrill Brown: Local Citizens Should Shake up News

Nicolas Lemann, the dean of the graduate school of Journalism at Columbia University, wrote in a New Yorker Piece: "As journalism moves to the Internet, the main project ought to be moving reporters there, not stripping them away."

That was from an article in 2006. Since then, the economic crisis has put a turn on his thoughts. According to Market Watch,  CJR Daily's Managing Editor resigned after Lemann chopped the site's budget nearly in half.

With traditional news outlets struggling to survive, some say, citizens are putting the destiny of news into their own hands.

Veteran journalist Merrill Brown says he sees opportunities for local citizens to shake up the news.
In an article in Market Watch, Brown says: ""This is a new opportunity for citizens to rethink local news because of the continuing deterioration of the print side of the business."

He says the secret lays in the simplicity and low-cost nature of blogging. People who blog usually have a passion for writing, and love the subject they are writing about. Bloggers who write about their city, local events, and news, only need a laptop and internet connection, and they're ready to go.

Brown believes bloggers can therefore make an consistent impact on local news.
He also says there have been several occasions where bloggers successfully made a huge news accomplishment. For more on that, check out the full article here.
