Local Newspaper Becomes Successful Citizen Journalism Blog

A year after newspaper 'the Tuscan Citizen' was shut down, tusconcitizen.com has turned into a citizen journalism blog "written by Tucsonans for Tucsonans."

It's not just an ordinary blog. The popular website (3 million unique visitors) is populated with an abundance of articles. More than 50 bloggers and citizen journalists write for the website on a regular basis.

"The bloggers and citizen journalists here provide news, information, opinion, commentary and perspective on the issues, interests and events that affect daily life in the Old Pueblo."

While traditional news outlets are cutting down on budgets, this website seems to be thriving. In a new post today, the site announced: "TucsonCitizen.com will now feature up-to-the-minute postings of breaking news, features, sports and financial and business news from some of the largest papers in the country, including the Arizona Republic and USA Today."

Instead of reporting on traditional news, the citizen journalists seem to be writing about what people are interested in. The article says they are here "to inform their community about issues that might not attract the attention of the daily newspaper or TV news."

It's a concept that seems to be working. The article says they add new citizen journalists and bloggers every week.
