Things I've learned from my PR Class

Random and valuable things I have learned from my PR class this semester:

- When I first started the class, I had a very generic understanding of PR. I now know it is so much more than just crisis communications and plaguing reporters with story ideas.
- If you have a UNT class in Dallas, make sure you don't go to the wrong location. There are two locations, I found out at the start of this semester - one in downtown Dallas (Universities Center) and one further down.
- The word 'Greenwashing.'  When I first found out Target would give a discount to every customer who brought their own bags, I thought they were just being nice. Turns out, they were just greenwashing.

- Don't wander around downtown Dallas in search of a coffee shop when the the tornado alarms are going off.
- PR is all about building trust. "People trust people like themselves," said guest speaker Danielle Allen. This theme was repeated throughout the semester.
- How to drive to downtown Dallas, find a parking spot, and walk to class in 45 minutes.

- Netflix's PR disaster could easily have been prevented. We talked about plenty of disaster communications strategies, and guest speakers gave us interesting insights.
- How to use the PRSA Code of Ethics.
- Where the cheapest parking lot near the Universities Center is located.
- Even the folks behind the Titanic had a PR plan
- People naturally function in tribes. That's why we sometimes do silly things, as long as we're together. This concept can be of great use in PR.
- How to set up and write a communications plan.
- PR is all about telling stories, and telling them right.
- Guinnea pigs need love too.
- There's a lot of satisfaction in helping a small non profit organization develop communication strategies.
- How Tiger Woods is trying to repair his bad image.
- Freedom of speech is often taken for granted in the US, but is considered a luxury in some parts of the world.

There are too many things I have learned in this class to mention in this blog post. All in all, I had a great experience.
When I started this class,  my image of PR wasn't great. The only experience I I had  with PR were countless unwanted phonecalls and emails from PR firms pushing story ideas every day - when I worked as a social media reporter at a Dallas TV station.
This class has given me a great insight in the actual art of PR. It was very helpful to listen to the experiences and insights of guest speakers, discuss PR tactics with class mates, and create a communications plan for an organization dear to my heart.
